The San Felipe Fort stands in the center of Bacalar, right by the main square. It was built in 1733 as a Mexican stronghold against invading English colonizers and pirates. Today it is a museum.

El fuerte es el emblema histórico construido en el siglo 16 para proteger a la población de los ataques de piratas. Dentro del museo podrán encontrar espadas, rifles y compases usados en la guerra de castas. El museo es modesto, pero con una hermosa vista. The views of the lagoon from the fort are great. There is a museum inside where you can learn the history of Bacalar.
