Incredible collection, fantastic guides, amazing history! This museum's a hidden gem in East Java and I highly suggest it to anyone interested in Indonesian culture and history who happens to be passing through the region. The collection on display here goes far beyond masks- the museum contains a whole range of traditional art and artifacts, many of which are hundreds- if not thousands- of years old. The Javanese section alone is enormous, but the museum also contains formidable displays on Sumatera (Batak), Sulawesi (Toraja), Nusa Tenggara (Bali, Flores), and Kalimantan (Dayak) as well. The opening sections of the museum display several well-written and interesting pieces on Indonesian history, complete with cgi through your phone camera, too. And lastly, the tour guides here are really excellent- friendly, thorough, and full of interesting information about everything you'll see. All in all, a real gem- two thumbs up.
