The building that houses the Born Cultural and Memory Centre used to be the old Born Market, opened in 1876. It forms part of other architectural masterpieces from a time in its history when Barcelona became part of modern Europe. An archaeological site has been found in the subsoil containing the remains of the outline of Barcelona’s streets and houses in 1700, which are testament both to life in the city and to the consequences of the 1714 siege.

1929. Barcelona International Exhibition. In this context, it was decided to build Poble Espanyol on the mountain of Montjuïc, as a synthesis of Spanish architecture, handicrafts and cultural wealth during the Exhibition. Almost a century later, Poble Espanyol is a living reflection of the soul of a country and a traffic-free, open-air precinct ideal for enjoying with family, partner or friends. Nice place to spend a morning with kids, with emblematic buildings of spain and places with local artisans with kids (And adults) can make a pottery workshop, fabrics.... super funny for kids

Both kids and adults will enjoy the charming little theme park. It was built in 1889, and a lot of the rides date back to this time, giving the park a whimsical feel. Don't expect any bare-knuckle rides, but the views and friendly atmosphere, with people in fancy dress parading through the park and interacting with the visitors, make for an enjoyable day out.

If you are touring the center, it is worth detouring a bit and visiting it, it is located next to the Wax Museum This bar is literally like a fairy tale. Divided into different rooms, it is full of corners where you can have a quiet drink, as a couple or in a group. Known for its eccentric decor, the bar is filled with trees and jungle vegetation, and also features a star-studded ceiling, a walkway with a bridge passing over a fountain, and a fairy bathing in it.

The restoration of the Modernista pavilions, which were declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1997, has provided the starting point for an active cultural programme whose main objective is to further our appreciation of this treasure of European Art Nouveau. Lluís Domènech i Montaner and his contribution to the Modernista movement, together with the institutional and heritage value of Sant Pau and its contribution to medicine are the key elements of this programme. One of my prefered places to visit, its incredible !

Construction of the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of Barcelona commenced on 1 May 1298, on the site of a Romanesque temple. The work was carried out in three stages over 150 years. As is true for many religious buildings, construction had to move at a slow pace. The elevator taking visitors to the rooftops can be accessed though the chapel of the Innocent Saints, next to the door of San Ivo. From the rooftops, we can see the two bell towers, the two lateral pinnacles, the cimborio crowned by the Holy Cross (sustained by the image of Saint Helena), the Cloister and a spectacular panoramic view of Barcelona. (Super recommended to visit)

The Sagrada Família will be the world’s tallest church upon completion (estimated for 2026). This 130-year labour of love, dreamt up by Antoni Gaudí, is one of the world’s most controversial basilicas, but also one of the most visited. Three million tourists flock here each year to gawk at the architectural achievement that has brought nature, light and religion together into one stunning ensemble. The interior is like a giant jigsaw puzzle, with each new architect’s style blending into the rest of Gaudí’s visionary design. Three million visits a year for something that hasn't even been finished, not bad is it. Arguably, you're better off seeing it before it's finished.

Casa Milà (popularly known as La Pedrera, ‘the stone quarry’) is a daring example of Gaudí’s use of stone. You haven't seen stone like it. When La Pedrera, his last civic project, was first commissioned in 1906, the building became a laughing stock for its undulating façade, wrought-iron balconies and vast windows. Today, of course, it’s viewed quite differently, and Gaudí’s innovative, self-supporting stone exterior has won it a spot on Unesco’s World Heritage Site list.

Up in Barcelona’s Horta-Guinardó neighbourhood, this maze of walls and walkways consisting of a bunch of gardens, little architectural displays and more, all boasting breathtaking hillside views of the whole city. Highlights when visiting include the Hall of One Hundred Columns (though it actually has 86); the mosaic serpent bench; and the salamander on the main steps. You can enter the park for free, but if you want to get into the ‘Monumental zone’, you’ll pay around €10 to see the iconic mosaic bench and dragon (and more). For bigger parkage, you could stroll over to Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola, which is just two kilometers away.

The museum was created by the artist himself and his friend and secretary, Jaime Sabartès, who donated his collection to the cause. More than 3,800 works make up the permanent collection, and it also hosts an array of temporary exhibitions. It's located in the located in the Hôtel Salé in rue de Thorigny, so it's a grand place outside and in.

This is undoubtedly the most famous street in Barcelona. Stretching from Port Vell to Plaça de Catalunya in the centre, La Rambla offers a bevy of shops, flower stands, artworks and attractions. Don’t miss the ornate Canaletes fountain, Boqueria market, Liceu opera house and Teatre Principal. It's a straight one and a bit kilometers of good stuff. It also takes you pretty much right by the sea.

Most locals will only see this light, music and water show when they’re little kids or when they have to act as tour guides for visitors. But whether you’ve got your own offspring in tow or not, the show brings out childlike wonder in us all. After all, it is MAGIC. Designed by Carles Buïgas, it’s one of the last remaining attractions made for the 1929 International Exposition. So you'll be able to catch it whenever you're relatively nearby. It's at Avinguda Maria Cristina, which is in the neighborhood of Montjuïc. A good option is watch it from the terrace of Arenas Shopping center.

The building, constructed in a Neo-Mudejar style and which formerly held bullfights in the city, is today a spectacular shopping centre. Apart from preserving its beauty, the conversion has restored a roof terrace that offers wonderful views over Parc de Montjuïc and Barcelona. Apart from bullfighting, the ring has witnessed a number of difficult circumstances in the course of Barcelona’s history, being converted into barracks for the republican side during the Civil War. It later became the setting for boxing, circus and festivals. In the 1940s and 50s it was equipped with a detachable velodrome to enable cycling events to be held, at a time when competitive sports started to become fashionable in Catalan society.

The anti-aircraft guns were built in 1937, during the Civil War, when Barcelona was hit by almost 200 bombings a day. From the 1950s, with the boom in immigration, people moved in. When Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games in 1992, the city demolished the shacks and abandoned the space. It was locals who later fought for its recognition as a place of historic importance. Also, the views, yes they really are that good. Intentionally so too – originally the bunkers were meant to be used as a place where soldiers could survey the entire city.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through 14 hectares of beautiful greenery from around the globe right here in Barcelona. The botanical garden is split into five areas, with Australian, Californian, Mediterranean, South African and Chilean plants grouped neatly into each. Plus, if you look past the fauna you’ll get a cracking view of the city. There's about 1500 species in the Jardí Botànic, so there's a fait bit to be seeing. There's free entry on Sundays from 3:00pm and the first Sunday of every month all day.

Barcelona has more than 4.5 miles of beaches, from Sant Sebastià to Llevant. Many can be found in Barceloneta, the historic maritime and workers’ neighbourhood that sprung up on the island of Maians from the 17th century. It’s well worth wandering through the streets of Barceloneta to admire its modest yet charming two-storey houses. Another draw is the area’s excellent and varied cuisine, ranging from tapas and vermouth to paella and seafood. You can also spend a few good hours checking out the glitzy yachts lining the marinas such as Port Olympic complex.
