This is an absolute MUST SEE for visitors to San Diego who want to get beyond the "touristy" sights. This park under a freeway overpass in a largely hispanic (chicano) part of town is a part of our national civil rights movement, and has political, cultural and protest murals dating back to the 1970's from the days of Cesar Chavez. Si se puede! Don't miss this amazing part of our culture, and it's a fantastic area to look for REAL Mexican food.

Huge outdoor Chicano murals on the underside of Coronado Bridge. Sometimes festivals in that park. One of my favorite parts of San Diego. There's a playground, big grassy areas, benches, MAYbe BBQ grills. And it's on your way to the Coronado Bridge and Coronado island! Truly a seldom publicized gem of San Diego. Bring your camera if you like taking pictures!

Located directly under the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego is iconic Chicano Park in Barrio Logan district. With hundreds of Latin American murals painted on the bridge pillars, it is home to the United State's largest collection of outdoor graffiti. Created in 1970, it became a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Every April 22nd is Chicano Park Day to commemorate the Chicano community's successful peaceful takeover (or take back) of the land that was originally and rightfully theirs since the 1890s. Over the years it has been a contentious area due to building of government bases, freeways, bridges that blocked access to the bay and fractured the community.
