St mary's church, at the top of the 199 steps is well worth a look inside. Its jam packed with pews, some for strangers, one for the preachers wife, with ear trumpet.

St. Mary's Church, the Parish Church of Whitby, is next to Whitby Abbey. Free entry Gift shop. Open until 4 p.m. Easter -October. Access it by climbing the famous 199 steps (officially called Church Stairs), board the open top tourist bus and get off at Whitby Abbey stop, drive or taxi to Whitby Abbey and walk through churchyard. It was built in 1110 AD. and it has been prayed in for over 1000 years. Bell ringing. Unusual 3 decker pulpit, ear trumpets, William Scoresby chair and other exhibits.

Once you reach the top of the famous "199 Steps" you will be greeted by St. Mary's Church and the ruins of Whitby Abbey, which reportedly inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The views are spectacular up there. Definitely worth the effort. It's a great place to rest up inside the church. Very peaceful and interesting. I like to see the columns which were made out of old ships' masts. Recycling at its finest.

A spectacular church at the top of the 199 steps in Whitby. Make sure to try and find Dracula’s grave among the tombstones.
