Approx Half an hour south of Hobart is Kettering where you catch the ferry to Bruny. Can do it in a day but overnight preferable so you are not rushed. Bruny has great walks, beaches and a winery, cheesery and chocolate shop.
Plan to take the entire day and check the ferry timetable before you go. 40 min drive from Geilston Bay to Kettering where the ferry leaves from.
Many beautiful locations on Bruny to visit. Also lots of local food to taste and cidre and wine to sample.
Bruny Island is a truly serene, spectacularly rugged and olde world "nature at its best" environment. It is only an hour away from Hobart including the ferry ride. In all weather, I highly recommend this sanctuary island.

“This is a very accessible walk - 20min from the carpark on a low-moderate climb track you will be walking on an alpine plateau with views all the way to Bruny Island and Mt Wellington. If you continue to the top of Hartz Peak you will have 360 degree views to peaks such as The Western Arthurs, Mt La Perouse to the south, Frenchman's Cap”
