The hike to the Devil’s Punchbowl might be one of the most dangerous in the county. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported in 2005 that about one person dies here each year. The allure lies at the trail’s destination. Surrounded by 75-foot high cliffs, a magnificent waterfall splashes into a pool known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl. Hikers have been known to dive from the cliffs into the pool, but because of shallow waters and slippery rocks, it is highly dangerous. Additionally, hikers (or swimmers, depending on what you’re more excited for) should bring plenty of water, as this hike is not for those out of shape.

You'll need a permit (go online to reserve). On an Indian Reservation the trail ends at the punch bowl (waterfall with a basin).

Awesome hike to beautiful waterfalls and swimming hole. You must purchase tickets in advance and it sells out. Very difficult hike. Brings lots of water and it can be dangerous on very hot days in middle of summer. But the waterfalls and swimming hole is incredible!!

This one requires a day permit for $6, but it does need to be booked in advance as there is generally no day-of availability. It is also only seasonally accessible as it often gets closed in the heat of the summer as there are often cases of heat-stroke, and it tends to dry up. The hike is 6.6mi round trip. BUT if you manage to plan ahead and make a reservation, it is such a wonderful destination hike. You get to a beautiful little grotto that you can swim in if the temperature is right, with a waterfall flowing into it. The hike involves a few stream crossings and you basically hike down to the waterfall and then up to get back out. If you make this trip, be sure to bring lots of water and some snacks. There are some good picnic-ing boulders, nearby!
