2023 Season ... can you feel the love? The summer run opens with the four-star musical She Loves Me. George and Amalia, co-workers in a cosmetic shop, haven’t been getting along. Their adversarial relationship continues even though they have been exchanging letters after they both responded to a lonely-hearts advertisement. You will love the characters and songs in this award-winning musical. An intimate and touching show, featuring music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) and book by Joe Masteroff (Cabaret). Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. The Mikos Lazlos play Parfuemerie, on which it is based, has inspired many adaptations, including the beloved film You've Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, we meet shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who, more often than not, don't see eye to eye. After both respond to a "lonely hearts advertisement" in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. Join Amalia and Georg to discover the identity of their true loves... and all the twists and turns along the way! She Loves Me was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. The 1993 Broadway revival won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and the 1994 Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, while the 2016 Broadway Revival snagged the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design (beating Hamilton!). Dan Needles and Ian Bell take us on a crop tour of today’s rural Ontario with all new stories and songs. Ian is a founding performer for CBC’s Vinyl Café and Dan is the author of the beloved Wingfield Farm stage comedies. Together they explore the rural-urban divide that puzzles so many newcomers to the country. Prepare to be coached and instructed in the ancient rituals by two experts in the field. Inside Mrs. Joe Bradshaw—a 42-year-old mother of two grown children—is the former Shirley Valentine longing to get out. Her hope and self-confidence are badly shattered by school, marriage, and life, she is reduced to talking to the kitchen wall while preparing her husband’s evening meal—to be on the table as he opens the front door every night. As she sips a glass of wine she dreams of drinking in the country where the grapes are grown. Her feminist friend offers her a holiday in Greece and, with great trepidation and a lot of forward planning, Shirley seizes the opportunity and goes, encountering a totally new lifestyle. Shirley, breaking out of the mould cast for her by society, is brilliantly shown with humour, warm sympathy, and human insight. This hilariously engaging play was a hit in London and New York, performed by Pauline Collins, who later recreated her role on film garnering an Oscar nomination. Early Morning Rain! featuring Leisa Way and the Wayward Wind Band takes audiences on a musical journey that tells the story of Canada’s own Gordon Lightfoot. His songs are known worldwide, and his remarkable career spans over half a century. Lightfoot is a legend, in his own lifetime. After 50 years of hit song-making and international album sales well into the multi-millions, it’s safe to say that legendary singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot resides atop the list of all-time greats with hits like “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway,” “Sundown,” “For Lovin’ Me,” “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Ribbon of Darkness,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, “Did She Mention My Name” and “Beautiful,” just to name a few. Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums, has 5 Grammy nominations, 17 Juno Awards, and earned 16 number ones, 18 top 10s and 21 top 40 hits. Other great artists who have recorded his songs include Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Hank Williams, Jr., Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Peter Paul & Mary, Glen Campbell, and Toby Keith. In 2012, Lightfoot’s legacy was further enhanced when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and decorated with the Governor General’s Award and the Companion to the Order of Canada Honor of Merit. In 2023, Gordon Lightfoot turns 85, and this concert is a phenomenal way of celebrating this Canadian legend’s birthday! Opens on August 6th for five performances. Recommended for ages eight and up.
