Original 1700s garden with formal flower beds, soaring fountains & greenhouses for tropical plants. Ideal for a break in the middle of the city. Normally very quiet place.

18th century botanical garden. A must go. The green houses were renovated by João Mendes Ribeiro, the most known contemporary architect of the city.

The Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) in Coimbra is the oldest in Portugal and is associated with the nearby University of Coimbra. The purpose of the garden was to supplement the study of medicine and natural history at the University of Coimbra as medicinal plants were grown and exotic species, brought back from Portugal's overseas colonies, were planted.

Spread over various levels, staircases and avenues, the Botanic Garden is one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world, allowing a trip to the four corners of the earth, due to its plant diversity. The woods occupy two-thirds of the total garden area, which is essentially composed of exotic trees in free growth and bamboo woods.
